Raffle Update

by

A few things to take away from this photo:

giveaway winner1. I should really try not to wear my glasses on top of my head all the time.

2. Blondie is still and always more awesome than I will ever be.

3. The lovely Elease was the winner of the RT Expo Elements raffle extravaganza and is now the (hopefully) proud owner of all the Elements swag that has ever existed, signed copies of the first two books, and lots of Elements-inspired goodies.

4. She chose the mountain lion, so the otter is still available. I repeat: the otter is still available.

Yes, the play-along-at-home version of the giveaway is still in effect, partly because I was so distracted by the RT Convention (and subsequent RT Convention recovery) and partly because I’m a doofus who forgot to put an end date on the giveaway.

So, let’s say… Sunday May 12. Does that work for everyone? That’s three more days to like, tweet, and/or subscribe to the newsletter for a chance to win all this fabulousness:

IMG_1031

Signed books, Aidan Brook water bottle, Shifting Selves tote bag, snowflake ice cube trays, black cat greeting cards, hibiscus-scented candles, an Emerald Bay ornament made by local Truckee artists, the ever-elusive Elements charm bracelet, and, of course, the otter.

Same rules apply: giveaway is international, though non-North American peeps will need to be patient. I have a highly efficient giveaway system that involves drawing a slip of paper from a bowl. Said drawing will be witnessed by my cats, who will confirm there was no funny business involved in the process. You can enter up to three times by liking my page on Facebook, following me on Twitter (and posting a subsequent “no I’m not a bot and actually want to win this giveaway” tweet @miamarshalled), and subscribing to the newsletter (via widget in the sidebar, to the right of this post).

And good luck to everyone!

Post-RT Thoughts

by

It’s good to be home. I have my cats, my bed, my garden (if it ever stops raining), my privacy, and lots of quiet time to read and write. It’s everything I love. And yet, as exhausted as I am and as much as I need some quiet time to recover, I could have spent another week at the RT Convention. My liver might have made a break for it after another day or two, but the entire experience was more than I could have hoped for.

I went to the convention with three goals:

1. To increase awareness of the Elements series and get a few more people interested in checking it out.

2. To meet some industry people and hear directly what my options are in terms of getting an agent with a pre-published series.

3. To get away from my quiet mountain town and spend some time with genre readers and writers, since right now the only writers I know all live in my computer.

Well, it’s difficult to judge the success of the first one just yet. The book made it into a few curious hands, and now it’s a matter of waiting to see how long it takes to make it to the top of their to-read pile and whether it turns out to be their cup of tea. Fingers are crossed, of course, along with a few toes.

The industry meetings were a bit more fruitful, though they did confirm what I already suspected: though not impossible, it’s difficult to find representation for a published series that isn’t exactly burning up the bestseller charts. This just told me that, as much as I love the Elements world (and have a Seriously Cool plan for book 3), all my focus right now needs to be on finishing the first book in the 2nd world fantasy series I’ve been poking at for a few months now, which keeps being pushed to the side by various life events and by the need to publish and market Shifting Selves. But today I went back and read the first chapter again and remembered why I was so excited about this series. It’s time to bring this story fully to life and see where it takes me.

As for the third… well, damn. That’s really all there is to say. This was more than I could have ever hoped for. I met so many amazing, generous people–readers and writers, published and aspiring, bestsellers and struggling indies–and everyone was just fucking awesome. I know, I should probably try to say that in a more polished way, but that wouldn’t be the truth. This world, this convention, was full of people who were just fucking awesome from start to finish.

I hadn’t realized how much I needed this world until I was immersed in it. No one appeared to judge me for publishing with an indie press. No one seemed to care what my sales figures were (well, other than the agents, but I think they can be forgiven for that). No one asked me to explain what urban fantasy is, or why I choose to write it, or whether there should be romance in the series. I was in a magical land where everyone read and loved genre fiction, happily discussed hot sex scenes in their favorite books with no shame, and freely swapped swag and books and publishing knowledge. The only criteria for entry into this club was that you love books and that you don’t judge the books others love. And that level of inclusion, of camaraderie and acceptance, was damn hard to leave behind, even with my cozy home waiting for me.

I came back certain of two things. First, I am a writer, and it’s time to decrease the time spent on promotion and marketing and get back to the best part of the job: putting words on the page.

Second, I’ll be in New Orleans for RT14. After all, it’s a year away. My liver will likely have recovered by then.

RT Expo Raffle!

by

Greetings from Kansas city, MO and the RT Convention! I’d tell you all about the city and its weather, but I haven’t yet managed to leave the hotel. Instead, I’ve been chatting, attending seminars, exploring the Sheraton’s bars, and trying not to squee like a deranged fangirl when I see authors I love.

Also, I’ve been handing out more swag, and today, at the RT Ebook, Indie Publisher, and Graphic Novel Expo, I am giving away the queen of all Elements swag. I’ve got two, count ‘em two, goody bags to raffle off–one to Expo attendees, and one to the whole wide internet. You thought the blog tour bags looked good? You ain’t seen nothing yet.

Check out what’s up for grabs:

-A framed photo of Lake Tahoe (Expo attendee) or an ornament of Emerald Bay, made by local Truckee artists (internet winner)

-Either a plush otter or mountain lion (Expo attendee gets first pick)

-Snowflake shaped ice cube tray

-Elements-themed charm bracelet

-Scented candles to please your inner fire

-Aidan Brook aluminum water bottle

-Delphinium seeds for the earths out there

-Two cards featuring a paper-cut black cat

-Shifting Selves tote bag

-Signed copies of both Broken Elements and Shifting Selves

How can this embarrassment of riches be yours? Simple. If you’re at the Expo, stop by my table and fill out a raffle ticket. If you’re not at the Expo, you have a few options:

1. You can like me on Facebook. That’s it. You’re done. Everyone who has liked my page on Facebook–even if you liked it a month or a year ago–is entered.

2. You can follow me on Twitter. To make sure I don’t accidentally give the basket to a spammer, tweet at me what character in the Elements world you’d most like to meet for a drink, or at least a sandwich, and tell me why.

3. Subscribe to the newsletter (form in the sidebar). You must confirm your subscription to be entered.

You can enter one way, or all the ways. I’ll announce the Expo winner at 6pm today. The online winner will need to wait until I get home next Tuesday, when I will employ the high tech method of writing all the entries on a piece of paper and drawing the winner. The giveaway is open to everyone, regardless of which continent you live on.

I’ve got my fingers crossed for all of you. Just don’t ask where all the extra fingers came from.

Farewell, Tour + Giveaways

by

Today is the last day of the blog tour, and I need to give huge thanks to thank everyone who participated. It was wonderful to hop around to so many parts of the web and have the chance to connect with so many urban fantasy readers.

Last week wrapped up with a 5 star review from The Demon Librarian (5 stars! wooo!), and this week turned out to be interview week. If you want to learn my thoughts on the Elements series, wereotters, and penguins wearing sombreros, stop by The Book Reading Gals, Tangled Bookmarks, and Silk Screen Views.

Also, you still have lots of chances to win the giveaways. Frankly, considering how many bags-o-swag I’m handing out, anyone who doesn’t win one just isn’t trying hard enough. So, for your chance to win two signed books, an Elements tote bag, an Aidan Brook aluminum water bottle, and various odds and ends, hit up these sites below and add your comment or click the Rafflecopter badge–easy peasy.

Giveaways!

Literary Escapism

Larissa’s Bookish Life

Silk Screen Views

The Book Reading Gals

Tangled Bookmarks

And that’s it for the blog tour, at least until book 3. Next up: the RT Convention in Kansas City, MO. I better start packing.

Website Facelift

by

If you’re reading this in an RSS reader, click on through to see the shiny new website! I am an inveterate tweaker when it comes to such things, but for the moment I’m quite digging the new look and will likely leave it alone for at least a month or two.

Many thanks to Valerie at Inkblot Graphic Design Studio for coming up with the original logo and pointing me in the right direction in terms of personal branding, despite my hatred for that whole idea. Her logo is still on my business cards and she created all the designs on the various bits of swag I’ve been excitedly sharing. Erin at Eedee Design Studio took the branch Valerie created in the logo and produced the lovely background and social media icons, plus she did all the initial coding on the website. Finally, Shell at Purveyor of Geekery brought it all home with a new header, building on Valerie & Erin’s branches and brightening the former color scheme. They all did amazing work, and I’d recommend any one of them to someone looking for a graphic designer.

And the new widget at the top of the blog? Well, that’s all me (based on the old header widget Erin created), so if you hate it, I’m the one to blame.

What do you think? And what are the odds I’ll make it a full six months before I’m changing it again?

Shelves of Happiness

by

I’m settling slowly into my new house, though there remains a staggering amount of work to be done. For the most part, I’m ignoring the inside entirely in favor of the garden. Hey, I’ve had a kitchen before, but I’ve never had so much green space, and raised beds, and room to plant and play. I have to force myself to come in and work every morning.

I did, however, make some progress on the office. It’s not done yet, but I at least managed the most important part: I unpacked my to-read books.

To read shelves

Looking at this photo, I reach several conclusions:

1. I keep buying Sarah Waters books out of love of Fingersmith and Tipping the Velvet, but I never actually read them.

2. I’m sometimes slow to read books that were given to me. Sorry, Steph! I’ll get to those Tanya Huff books someday, I promise. The Help was also a gift, and I suspect that one will sit there for quite a while.

3. I bought A Dirty Job in hardback when it came out. In 2007. I have no idea why I’ve put off reading that, because Christopher Moore always makes me happy.

4. IKEA’s Billy bookcases really aren’t meant to last, are they?

5. I am really, really behind on several series, even ones I love. I need to get on that!

So, if this were your to-read pile, which book would you pull out first?

Book Tour Updates and Swag

by

A couple of updates to this week’s book tour:

I stopped by The Literati Press with an exclusive excerpt and dropped off a goody bag. To enter, just comment on the post with the magical power you’d most like to have.

We weren’t able to arrange a giveaway this time with The Demon Librarian (hopefully we’ll get you next time, Lynsey!), but she didn’t hold it against us, giving Shifting Selves a pretty awesome 5 star review.

And today I visited Larissa’s Bookish Life with another giveaway and an exclusive post about some of the ways I use music in the Element series. This time, you don’t even need to answer a question–just enter your email into Rafflecopter.

Me, I’m spending the next week writing as fast as I can, in an effort to get caught up after the rather disruptive move, and getting ready for the RT Convention. At the moment, my office is pretty much full of swag.

Raffle swag:

Swag for the RT Convention raffle

I’ve got all sorts of treats hidden in this box, and I’ll be raffling off two baskets at the E-book, Indie Published, and Graphic Novel expo on May 2. One bag-o-goodies will go to a convention attendee, but the second will go to someone playing along at home. Stay tuned for more details!

Even if you don’t win a basket, I’ll be handing out these water bottles at Club RT and throughout the convention, so stop by, say hi, and pick up your own Aidan Brook water bottle.

And here’s a peek at a little goody I’m holding onto for now. I clearly need to upgrade either my camera or my shaky hands, so you’ll have to trust me when I say they’re actually quite detailed and pretty adorable. I have about ten of these charm bracelets, and since I think those who love the series will appreciate them far more than a stranger who hasn’t read them yet, I’m saving them for something special. Any ideas?

Blog Tour Day #1

by

The blog tour kicks off today with a stop at Literary Escapism, where I talk about some of the reasons the Elements series came into being the way it did. Plus, there’s a contest! Who doesn’t love free stuff? To enter, just comment on the post with your answer to this great question:

Have you ever read a story that wasn’t clicking until just the right character appeared? If so, which character and which book was it in?

That’s a hard one to answer, but those that do are entered to win this fabulous goody bag, which contains signed copies of both Elements books, a tote bag, button, a mini book charm, and an aluminum water bottle (not shown).

Shifting Selves Release Day!

by

As of today, Shifting Selves is officially released! I’m thrilled to have it out in the world at last. Huge thanks to everyone at Match Books who worked on this release and to Cynthia Fliege for another great cover design.

Extra special thanks to those who read and loved Broken Elements and have been spreading the word to all who would listen. All the marketing in the world makes no difference if readers aren’t discussing the books and sharing their love of the series, and you’re the main reason people are discovering these books. I appreciate what you do more than I can say. Or I could say it, but it would be all fawning and ridiculously over-the-top, and we should probably just avoid that.

So instead, whip up a batch of pancakes, grab your copy of Shifting Selves, and return to the Elements world. I hope you love it.

Just One More Day…

by

It’s nearly here! Just one more day until Shifting Selves (Elements, #2) is released into the wild. Tomorrow morning, I’ll be in a local diner, ordering a big plate of pancakes to celebrate. Who’s with me? (More to the point, who really needs an excuse to eat a big plate of pancakes?)

If you want to get caught up on the Elements series, now is an excellent time to grab a copy of Broken Elements (Elements, #1). The ebook is just $2.99–a nice, affordable price, no matter what level of pain the IRS inflicted this year.

Perhaps you’d like a free copy of Shifting Selves (and if you’re really nice, I might even throw in a copy of Broken Elements). There’s one more day left in the Goodreads giveaway, so get your entries in now!

Me, I’m getting ready for my first ever blog tour this week. I have some wonderful stops planned over the next two weeks, and I’m thrilled to visit these excellent blogs, all run by some seriously dedicated urban fantasy readers and reviewers. The schedule for the next two weeks looks something like this:

April 16 — Literary Escapism
April 17 — The Literati Press
April 18 — The Demon Librarian
April 19 — Larissa’s Bookish Life
April 22 — Silk Screen Views
April 25 — The Book Reading Gals

Just for good measure, each blog will also be holding a giveaway, so stop by each site, say hi, and enter to win an awesome Elements swag bag. Signed books, a tote bag, a water bottle, and a few odds and ends will be handed out at each stop! I’d provide a photo, but UPS has yet to stop by today with the last of the goodies. Trust me, though–it’s awesome.

But really, the important thing is the pancakes. Priorities, yo.
